Students who want to pursue a career in theatrical makeup have a number of options, particularly on either side of the country located near large cities. The schools in these cities offer students the advantage of being near major theatre venues such as Broadway, where they can examine their craft or, perhaps, receive internships with performing groups.
EI School of Professional Makeup
The EI School of Professional Makeup offers courses in beauty and corrective makeup, high fashion photographic makeup, hair styling, air-brushing, wedding business and the psychology of beauty. Instructors are professionals in the industry, and all of them have years of experience. They all also specialize in one particular area. Their library has over 1,000 volumes, hundreds of magazines and photographs of specialty makeup. They also accept international students after they have obtained their student visas. When students come close to graduation time, career services help with resumes, business card production, finding job listings and other components of the job search.

Joe Blasco Makeup School
Joe Blasco Makeup school prides itself on the fact that one of its campuses in located in Hollywood, and near a number of popular theatrical and cinematic venues including the Egyptian Theatre, Greek Theatre, Hollywood Bowl, Paramount Pictures and Raleigh Studios. Courses include professional make-up artistry and advanced prosthetics. For masters students, combined courses are offered consisting of the aforementioned two in addition to advanced beauty. In addition, the school is the longest existing one of its kind, appearing on the scene in 1980. The school does not have on campus housing; however, they recommend housing accommodations at the nearby Rancho Los Feliz, Best Western Hollywood Hills, City Heights, Oakwood Corporate Housing and Hampton Place.

Make-Up Designory
At two campuses, one in Los Angeles and the other in New York, students are prepared for careers in the entertainment, fashion and retail business. Programs in New York include fashion makeup artistry, film and television makeup artistry, multimedia makeup artistry and master makeup artistry. Courses include fundamentals of beauty makeup, studio hairstyling for the makeup artist, beauty lab, character makeup, lab techniques and an airbrush class. Their career services program promises to help current students, as well as students who have already graduated from the school. In addition to traditional requirements for admission into an institution of higher learning, students must also pass a written examination.
