Rolled Paper Art Projects

Rolled Paper Crafts and Art Projects

Making rolled paper art projects is a great arts and crafts activity for kids in preschool or kindergarten. It can also be a wonderful art class lesson for elementary school children. Rolled pieces of colorful tissue paper can be used to make unique, two- or three-dimensional pictures, mosaic art and life-size posters too. These paper roll crafts and projects will be easy and fun for youngsters.

Make Paper Rolls for Art Projects

The first step to any rolled paper art project is making the rolled paper. You can do this by using colorful sheets of tissue paper, a pencil and scissors or a paper cutter. Simply roll the paper around the pencil until you have several layers of rolled paper. Remove the pencil from the paper roll, then divide and cut the roll into equal pieces. Do this for each color you would like to use in the art project.

Alternatively, art teachers and parents with money to spend may want to consider pre-packaged paper roll art kits. See below in the resource section for more information.

Two-Dimensional Art Projects With Rolled Paper

Once you have perfected your ability to make rolled paper, you can create two-dimensional art with it. Draw a picture, color it in and then use glue to attach the paper rolls to the picture. Some good rolled paper picture choices might be butterflies, food, rainbows, flowers or animals. Young children might enjoy making pictures of the first letters in their names, and use paper rolls of various colors to decorate them.

Another idea is to have students work together on a large paper roll banner for the classroom. The banner could be seasonal, for instance "Happy Holidays" or "Happy Valentine's Day" banners would both be great group art projects with rolled paper.

Three-Dimensional Rolled Paper Art Projects

Rolled paper can also be glued to three-dimensional objects such as pencil holders, boxes or foam masks to make interesting and unique gifts. To make a rolled paper box, for example, a plain box can be colored in a particular pattern with markers and then the rolled paper can be glued to it. The finished box can be used as art supply storage for paint brushes, scissors and glue.

Finishing Off Rolled Paper Art Projects

To make your rolled paper craft long-lasting and sturdy, use a shellac spray or sealer (finish) to harden the paper. Fast drying and easy to use, spray shellac can be used for many different art projects to protect and preserve a young artists' work. This important step is especially recommended for three-dimensional projects, since these items will be handled more often than a two-dimensional picture will be.
