Paint A Flag

Paint a flag with bright colors.

Painting is a creative way to teach children about art. Getting messy with paint, while creating shapes on paper, is what most children enjoy about painting. Paint a flag to celebrate festive occasions throughout the year, such as Memorial Day or Fourth of July, on a sheet of paper with acrylic paints. Paste the paper to a popsicle stick to hold the flag with pride in public, or display the painted flag in front of your home as a decoration.

Instructions

1. Place 1-inch of paint for each color used to paint the flag on a disposable plate. Fill the cup with water, to clean the brush while painting, and place the paper towel next to the cup. The paper towel will be used to pat the brush dry after cleaning the brush in water.

2. Lay the sheet of cardstock paper horizontally on a table. Dip the brush into the darkest color of acrylic paint, and create two 9-inch horizontal lines on the sheet of paper, 6 inches apart from each other. Then stroke two vertical lines on the left and right side of the horizontal lines, creating a rectangle.

3. Outline the inside the flag with the brush. For example, if painting an American flag, outline a 4-by-3 inch rectangle on the upper left corner of the flag. Then outline horizontal lines across the surface of the flag, 1-inch apart. Apply one coat of acrylic paint in each section on the flag with the corresponding colors.

4. Allow the first coat of acrylic paint to dry for 15 minutes on the cardstock paper, before applying a second layer. The second coat of paint will make each color appear opaque and prevent the cardstock paper's surface from showing through. Allow the paint to dry for one hour after painting the flag.
