Stencil On White Cotton Fabric

Stenciling can enhance your clothes and furnishings.

Creating your own designs on clothes personalizes them. Stenciling is reasonably easy to do, and as you practice you will be able to get more adventurous and imaginative. Practice on cheap white 100-percent cotton T-shirts, then graduate to work on dresses, jeans or other tops. You can also use stenciling on home furnishings and walls.

Instructions

1. Place the white cotton fabric flat on a table and smooth out any creases. Iron it first if necessary. Lay a piece of cardboard behind the fabric to ensure no paint leaks through onto the table surface.

2. Put the stencil on the fabric in the position you want the design. Using either spray fabric paint or a brush version, carefully spray or paint over the stencil, holding it firmly so it does not move.

3. Lift the stencil off the fabric. Lift it vertically without moving it on the fabric so you do not smudge the design.

4. Dry the paint with a hair dryer. If you want to add another design, repeat the process.

5. Practice this method a few times using different stencils to create various designs and styles, and then move on to the actual item you want to stencil.
