A visual artist grant can be an essential aid to an artist. It can help pay for material or an installation of artwork, and some are even specifically targeted to pay for an artist's living expenses, freeing up time for the studio. The competition is usually high for these cash grants, but you can give yourself an edge by doing your research carefully and providing the information the grantee is looking for in the right format. In addition, reproductions of the highest quality are required. If the reviewers cannot see what your work looks like, they won't take the time to look it over with care. Most foundations prefer that you get information on grants from their websites. If they do not have a website you can write to them by mail or email with questions or application procedures. Telephone calls are generally discouraged.
Pollock-Krasner Foundation
The Pollock-Krasner Foundation was set up by the artist Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock's wife, after Pollock's death. It gives out cash grants for artist's materials and living expenses to artist's worldwide, in amounts up to $30,000. It is highly competitive.

A Room of Her Own Foundation, named after the famous book by Virginia Woolf, makes grants of up to $50,000 for a two-year period to a female fiction writer or visual artist. Visual artists must work in sculpture, photography or painting. It is called the Gift of Freedom award.

Change, Inc.
Change, Inc. is a foundation set up by the late Robert Rauschenberg. One-time grants of up to $1,000 are awarded to visual artists based on financial need. The foundation does not have a website or a telephone number. Write the foundation for current guidelines, and be prepared to file reproductions of your artwork and financial information such as bills and other expenses with your application.
