Paint Arches In Murals

Create a captivating mural by adding an archway feature.

Murals are large paintings usually found on the outsides of buildings or on walls within a house. They are often displayed in public places as part of a community beautification program. Although subject matter varies greatly, sweeping landscape views and busy city scenes are frequently used in murals. Regardless of the subject matter, it is possible to enhance visual interest by adding arches, whether it be by painting them on a bridge within the mural or by adding decorative arches to the top of a building.

Instructions

1. Prepare your work area by covering the floor and any furniture with drop cloths. For clean edges, section off the area to be painted with wide masking tape.

2. Pour a small amount of base coat into a paint pan. Saturate the roller with the paint and apply it to the wall, using more paint if necessary. Allow the base coat to dry overnight or for the time suggested on the container.

3. Sketch a rough outline for the arches using a pencil. To create a realistic perspective, make the arches larger toward the edge of the mural and allow them to become smaller as they approach the center of the painting. This creates a horizon line and a sense of dimension in your mural.

4. Fill in the face of the archways with the color of your choice.

5. Paint the inside of your archway with a darker shade of the color you used for its face. This creates the illusion of shadow and adds depth to the structure.

6. Allow the paint to dry before adding any details (brick patterns, foliage) to your arch structure.

7. Paint the rest of the mural as desired.

8. Allow the paint to dry overnight, or for the time suggested on the container. If desired, apply a water-based varnish to protect the mural.
