Transfer Color Print Images Onto Sheet Metal

Water transfers can be done on painted or unfinished sheet metal.

Sheet metal can be decorated with color print images printed on water transfer paper. This type of paper can be purchased at some hobby and craft supply stores, and from on-line retailers such as Lazertran and Decal Connection. Images can be printed and applied to clean sheet metal in under 15 minutes. It may take up to 24 hours to dry completely before varnish or clear coat can be applied to the image, however.

Instructions

1. Print the image on the water transfer paper using an ink jet printer. Trim the image with scissors.

2. Pour water into a shallow bowl that is large enough to soak the entire image. Soak the water transfer paper for a minute and a half or until the backing paper begins to separate. Use your fingers to completely separate the image from the backing.

3. Slide the image into position, and smooth with a wet paper towel or rubber squeegee.

4. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Seal with several coats of acrylic clear coat spray paint applied according to package instructions.
