Pick Music For A Cotillion

Modern-day cotillions--dances intended to teach adolescents manners and properly interact--don't play just one type of music. Today's cotillion intermingles classic dance music with contemporary tunes to appeal to the younger generation. Learn pick music for a cotillion to satisfy the diverse tastes of those in attendance.

1. Choose music for a cotillion that incorporates different styles of dance. While traditional music such as the waltz and fox trot are common at modern-day cotillions, contemporary top-40 music is used to attract the attention of young people.


2. Pick special music if the cotillion has a theme. Choose Christmas music for a winter cotillion, Latin-influenced music--such as the cha-cha or tango--for a culturally-themed cotillion or country music for a western theme. Themed cotillions are a fun way to allow the students to showcase any special dance moves they have learned throughout the year.


3. Check the music you choose for cotillions before the cotillion begins. Cotillions are atmospheres where manners are of the utmost importance. Music used at a cotillion needs to be reverent and wholesome. Check to ensure the cotillion music has no vulgar language or improper innuendos. If you aren't the final say in music, have the music approved by the director of the cotillion prior to the special dance.
