The Best Wood Carving Books

The Best Wood Carving Books

Wood carving appeals to creative people who typically have an appreciation for nature. From ancient Persia to ancient China, wood carving's appeal is found in the blending of practical use and artistic expression. In the mid-20th century, America saw woodworking take a backseat to newer works in metal. Yet, wood carving has proven to be an art form for the ages. In selecting books to go with your gouges and rasps, look for those that offer a history of this timeless craft, as well as those offering practical how-to information and projects by master woodcarvers and carpenters.

Manual of Traditional Wood Carving

Any artist must first understand the story of his art. As such, "Manual of Traditional Wood Carving" by Paul N. Hasluck is an excellent primer. Hasluck is so dedicated to the history of his craft that in the chapter "History of Wood Carving: Styles of Wood Ornament," he includes a detailed description of the first historically considered piece of wood carving, Sheikh-el-Beled, a statue made of sycamore. Hasluck thoroughly covers the history of wood carving as well as tools, instruction and techniques.

The Beginner's Handbook of Woodcarving

"The Beginner's Handbook of Woodcarving: With Project Patterns for Line Carving, Relief Carving, Carving in the Round, and Bird Carving" by Charles Beiderman and William Johnston covers the basics of the craft. Customer reviews at Amazon.com are above average, however, they also note that this book is intended for the true beginner. Techniques and terminology are carefully explained in applicable terms. The overall intent of this book is perhaps best noted in its introduction: "Manual skill comes from the knowledge of the shapes and uses of tools and by putting this knowledge into actual practice."

New Yankee Workshop

Perhaps no one has driven interest in woodworking more than Master Carpenter, Norm Abram of public broadcasting's This Old House and The New Yankee Workshop. His book, "The New Yankee Workshop," should inspire anyone to learn techniques to create the intricate furniture and fixtures often seen on Abram's show. The book claims to take you step-by-step through the building and carving process of several projects. Perhaps the most important aspect of "The New Yankee Workshop" is Abram's teaching skills. Abrams has been teaching through his shows since 1976, which comes through in the book.

The Complete Book of Woodcarving

Peers and readers praise "The Complete Book of Woodcarving: Everything You Need to Know to Master the Craft" by Everett Ellenwood. Woodworking Plans and Projects, UK, writes: "If there is one book that encompasses all a beginner needs to know about woodcarving in a simple and clear way, then it's this volume from Everett Ellenwood." Fundamental techniques, carving styles, choosing wood and setting up a wood shop are just a few of the many topics covered.
