Styrofoam Projects

Create keepsake crafts and beautify your home with Styrofoam projects.

Styrofoam-brand polystyrene foam is an inexpensive, lightweight material used as a medium to create craft and sculptural art projects. Eco-friendly Styrofoam projects can be found online, in craft stores and in libraries to make reusable and recyclable crafts for kids. You can use Styrofoam to construct detailed interior architectural accents, design floral masterpieces throughout your home or celebrate special occasions.

Crafts

Kids can extend their creativity using Styrofoam packing or preformed shapes of various sizes for their art projects whether they are at home or in school. Recycled Styrofoam crafts are a fun way for children to turn everyday items such as foam cups or foam peanuts that are often thrown away into a masterpiece or a memorable keepsake. Delve deeper into a child's creative mind and incorporate learning and theory with Styrofoam kits to make solar and molecular systems, airplanes that glide and boats that float.

Home Decor

If you are looking for inexpensive projects to decorate a space or room in your house, create customized and stylish accents by embellishing Styrofoam with materials or paint to beautify your home. Design a modern wall art display by disguising sheets of Styrofoam wrapped in choice fabric or decorative paper. Installing Styrofoam crown molding, ceiling tiles and cornices would be a quick and easy interior-design project that would add visual interest and elegance to any room. Simply paint over the forms as you would with ordinary wood moldings or overlay a cornice with material for a finished and professional look. Create seasonal floral arrangements and accents with preformed Styrofoam shapes and forms by adding dried or silk flowers and natural materials to make wreaths and topiaries.

Occasions

For special occasions such as birthdays, baby and wedding showers or seasonal and sporting events make memorable, themed decorations and favors with Styrofoam. Reduce floral expenses for your wedding and create one-of-a-kind wedding bouquets by inserting natural or silk flowers into a Styrofoam bouquet holder. Conceal and embellish the handle by wrapping it in a coordinating ribbon. Oval and and round Styrofoam forms can be used for seasonal projects; make special holiday gifts by handcrafting and painting delicately detailed Styrofoam Easter eggs and silk-wrapped Christmas ornaments.

Technique

The Dow Chemical company suggests using acrylic craft paints and white craft glue on their Styrofoam-brand foam to prevent damaging the surface of the foam. Styrofoam can be cut and carved with serrated knives or by cutting templates into desired forms and shapes for your projects. Smooth rough edges with sandpaper and coat with a molding compound or material to create texture.
