Poster Hanging Ideas

Skip the traditional thumbtacks and try hanging posters with less damaging items such as sticky tack.

Posters might seem like drab pieces of wrinkled paper, but with the proper tools and a few creative ideas, they can become sophisticated pieces of artwork to brighten or unify any room in your home. Ranging from sleek movie posters that spice up a living room to quirky poster collages that create abstract art in your bedroom or den, you can create almost any look with these cheap items. Display your most cherished pieces or choose new posters for a fresh look.

Minimalist Style

If you want a clean and sophisticated way to hang your posters, a more minimalist approach will allow you to display your favorite pieces without drawing too much attention away from the rest of the room. Use simple black poster frames and hang the posters so they are even. You can use a laser level to help hang the pictures straight and in a row. Try hanging one above the focal point of the room, such as above the bed or couch. You can also frame large pieces of furniture by placing one poster on either side. The black frame matches any color scheme and works well in a living room. Hang movie posters and it will feel like your own home theater.

Collages and Patterns

For a more abstract, artistic feel to your decor, consider arranging your posters in a pattern or collage. For cheap posters you don't care to cut up, you can carefully cut the poster into large pieces and overlap them or space them out on the wall. Cut them out in large squares or in unusual shapes. Attach the pieces to the wall using a small piece of sticky tack, double-sided tape or poster putty. Consider a random order for an abstract display or create a more realistic feel by placing key pieces, such as the face of the person on the poster, close to the body and so forth. This allows you to still tell what the image is while creating your own Picasso-style work of art.

To create a pattern using uncut posters, vary the sizes or the way you hang them. If you have both full-size and smaller posters, alternating between them across the wall will add an interesting border. For posters of the same size, you might alter the positioning between them to create a diagonal line or a zigzag pattern. The Apartment Therapy website suggests using binder clips to keep from damaging posters. Hang the binder clip's handles over a nail or pushpin in the wall and clip it to the top of the poster.

3D Posters

To add life to your existing posters, buy an extra copy of the poster or scan parts of it and print them on photo paper. Cut out certain, smaller images from the poster and attach them to the walls to make it appear that the poster is stretching beyond its borders. Butterfly posters work well with this decorating trick. Cut out some of the butterflies and fold their wings up to make them appear 3D. Attach them in spots along the edges of the poster and the walls. Your butterfly poster now seems to have sprung to life.
