Black Walls, White Trim
Paint the walls black, and paint all of the trim in the room white. The door and window frame should also be white. To give the room extra pop, add a chair rail and make picture boxes (frames) on the walls from molding and also paint them white. This look was perfected by Donatella Versace, who designed a room for the plaza that was featured in the September 2007 issue of "House and Garden" magazine.
Black Walls, Mirror Decor
Black walls are a great base for mirrored decor. Paint the walls solid black, and use silver metallic paint for trim. Hang decorative mirrors in a grid on the walls and use metallic accessories, as well as crystal, chrome and silver to decorate the room. Fabric upholstery and window treatments should have a metallic color and texture.
Black Walls, White Stencils
Make your black walls more elegant and upscale by adding Victorian white stencils. Use fleur-de-lis in a diamond pattern all over the walls or as a border around the room. You can also add white pinstripes to the walls or use a stencil of a tree and birds to create a white toile effect on your black walls.
Painting Tips
When painting walls black, there are a few things you need to know. First, it takes several coats to get the wall black. Even if it looks fully black, when it dries, tiny spots of the previous color will show through. Let the walls dry completely and decide if you need another coat of paint. High-quality rollers will do the best job. Flat black paint will show scuff marks easily. To prevent leaving marks on the walls from someone accidentally rubbing against it, you should avoid using flat paint and go for eggshell or satin.
