Start A Sketchbook

A sketchbook is great for perfecting your artistic skills and providing inspiration. Anybody can start one, and like art, there are no rules. It's totally up to you what goes in it and when you get going; you might find that you're very artistic after all. Here are some suggestions for getting started.

Instructions

1. Decide what type of sketchbook you'll need. Think about the binding type, paper size, paper weight and what you'll be using to make the entries. If you're a mixed media artist, you might consider making the sketchbook. Use different weights and textures of paper to accommodate your needs.

2. Get recommendations and input from other artists who keep a sketchbook or a journal.

3. Buy good quality when you make your purchase. You want it to stand the test of time, so quality is important.

4. Set goals for making regular entries. The more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it at a later date. After all, it's your artistic growth chart.

5. Write the date on each page or enter the start and finish date on the front or back of the sketchbook like you would a check register. Do whatever works for you.

6. Keep every page, no matter whether it's good or bad. It may delight you with ideas in the future, or at the very least, you'll be able to look back and realize just how far you've come.

7. Relax and have fun with it every day. Always have your sketchbook and pencils with you, so when the inspirations come, you can develop them.
