S10 Fuel Pump Removal

The fuel tank has to be removed when the fuel pump breaks down.

The Chevrolet S-10 uses a fuel pump that is installed in the fuel tank. The in-tank pump sends fuel through the fuel line and into the engine. A faulty fuel pump will require taking the fuel tank down for access to the pump. The pump can be replaced as a full assembly or the pump by itself.

Instructions

1. Ensure the truck is parked on a level surface. Chock both of the front wheels in the front. This will prevent the truck from rolling as the truck is raised.

2. Place a jack under the differential, and raise the truck high enough to place jack stands under the rear axle. Lower the truck on to the jack stands.

3. Locate the fuel tank under the back of the truck. The fuel tank is located directly under the bed and is secured in by two straps. Place the jack under the fuel tank.

4. Unbolt the straps with a socket wrench. Allow the tank to lower on to the jack.

5. Disconnect the fuel lines by pulling the locking tabs back and pulling the lines off the inlet lines of the fuel tank. Unclip the electrical wires the same way. Pull the remaining vacuum lines off the line. They are not locked in and can be pulled off the lines.

6. Unclamp the hose clamp on the fuel filler line at the back of the tank. Pull it off the fuel tank.

7. Lower the fuel tank to the ground, and pull it away from the truck.

8. Tap the retaining ring at the top of the fuel tank with a screwdriver and hammer. The screwdriver will act as a punch as it pushes the retaining ring counterclockwise. Pull the ring off by hand when it is loose.

9. Pull the fuel pump assembly out of the fuel tank at an angle so the sending unit will not bend. Place the assembly on a work table.

10. Unscrew the small screws holding the fuel pump to the assembly with a Phillips screwdriver. The fuel pump is the cylindrical shape component on the assembly.
