Types Of Theatrical Makeup Applicators

Understanding the different types of applicators will help to achieve a desired look.

When it comes to creating the right look for a character on stage, how your makeup is applied is important. Makeup can age you, transform you into something otherworldly, or simply get you ready for a night on the town. Understanding the different types of theatrical makeup applicators will you help achieve your desired look.

Powder Puff

To lock in foundation, use a powder puff. Dip the puff in loose or pressed powder, then apply on top of foundation makeup. This creates a smooth finish and will help set the makeup.

Hydra Sponge

The foam "hydra" sponge is a versatile applicator. You can use it to apply any type of foundation, though it works best when applying liquid foundation. The hydra sponge won't cause streaks when applying makeup and is great for blending.

Latex Foam Sponge

For cream makeup, the best applicator is the latex foam sponge. This sponge provides a smooth and even application and is great for blending more than one foundation color, preventing uneven tones. The latex sponge is also good for removing loose eyeshadow or smudging eyeliner without messing up the foundation.

Nylon Stipple Sponge

To create texture, use a nylon stipple sponge. This sponge creates a "stipple" effect for beard stubble, or texture around the face.

Natural Sea Sponge

Cake makeup is a lot thicker than cream or liquid foundation, so you may want to use a natural sea sponge. This sponge prevents streaking, blends makeup well and can also create texture. Because of its natural qualities, this applicator can be reused by cleaning with soap and water. To remove cake makeup film, use makeup remover prior to cleaning with soap and water.

Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes come in a variety of sizes, from small to large and flat to rounded. Brushes are used to apply loose or liquid makeup. For example, they can be dipped in water, then in powder makeup to create a liquid or liner. Makeup brushes are reusable and should be cleaned regularly with soap and water or brush cleaner.

Stainless Steel Spatula

The double-sided spatula is used to blend cream or liquid makeup. It's also used to manipulate and mold modeling wax or putty. You can use a small spatula to create detail when applying makeup or when molding or sculpting.
