Everyone has been in the uncomfortable situation of not knowing what to say while in the presence of strangers. A good conversationalist is not someone who talks a lot, but someone who is a great listener. There are some steps to keep in mind when you meet new people that will make this process much more enjoyable for everyone involved.
Instructions
1. Have an open mind and take an interest in the people you meet. People are more willing to open up to a person in whom they sense genuine attentiveness and concern for others.
2. Listen before you speak. Do not be so anxious to begin speaking that you talk over your companions. Allow someone else to start the conversation if appropriate.
3. Ask open-ended questions if you decide that it is your responsibility to begin the conversation. Avoid questions that allow a "yes" or a "no" answer. Ask questions that start with "Who," What," "Where," "How," or "Why." These questions generally require more detailed answers.
4. Target your questions toward provoking others to share information about themselves and their interests. Stick to topics that will not offend, such as weather or educational background, until you build a rapport with someone.
