Raise A Feminist Daughter

The Women's Liberation Movement propelled feminism into the limelight. Feminism addresses women's rights and issues about choice, fairness and equality of gender roles in an egalitarian society. It's paramount that parents raise feminist daughters to carry on with the feminist movement, allowing all women the right to be true to their own individuality.

Instructions

1. Educate your daughter about the struggles women have faced in the past and still face today. Inform her about the history of feminism and why it is important that women remain adamant about maintaining and gaining rights.

2. Surround your daughter with strong confident women. Give her real-life role models that are inspiring and encouraging. Allow her to critically analyze images in her generation and assist her in developing her own ideas.

3. Teach your daughter to respect others. Show her by your example that people with differing opinions and value systems are important to a democratic society. Sit down and explain gender roles and issues of discrimination that shape your daughter's life.

4. Let your daughter try a variety of pastimes and hobbies. Give her the freedom to define her interests and allow her to try ballet or football if she so chooses. Raise her to try new things.

5. Treat your daughter with respect and love. Set boundaries so she learns that her actions have consequences for herself and others. A feminist woman recognizes that her choices are not free from societal implications.

6. Encourage your daughter to speak with grandmother, aunts and other women in her life about feminism. Allow her to discuss with you and her extended family women's experiences from different generations.
