Shape Fiberglass

Fiberglass is a wonder substance. It creates durable and lightweight material that can work into everything from car frames to garage doors. One of the finest elements of this substance is that it can be molded to meet whatever needs you have. Shaping your fiberglass can be an easy and effective way to create whatever you need.

Instructions

1. Create a mold in the shape of whatever you are trying to create out of fiberglass. One of the most popular methods for shaping fiberglass is to use chicken wire and paper mache. With these two elements you can sculpt any shape you need.

2. Mix together the fiberglass resin and hardener. Fiberglass begins its life as a liquid which you can spread on the mold. Go to your local hardware store and select the fiberglass resin that meets the needs of your project. Mix them outdoors with plenty of ventilation.

3. Apply your first coat of fiberglass resin to the mold. Use a paint brush and apply it just like you would a coat of paint in a thick layer. It is a good idea to make fiberglass as thick as possible while still maintaining the structural integrity you need for the project.

4. Allow your coat to fully dry which may take several hours. Once you are positive it is dry, apply a second coat and allow it to dry. In most cases a third coat will be necessary to create a solid surface which you can be sure will last for a long time.

5. Remove the mold from the fiberglass. Ideally, this should not stick to the fiberglass, so you can shake it out or pull it apart with relative ease. Be careful not to damage your fiberglass shell.
