Vinyl Cutting Tips

Vinyl can be used to create numbers for boats.

Vinyl is a material that can adhere to clean, smooth, dry surfaces. Vinyl is ideal for making signs, decorations or for labeling on boats and vehicles. Letters, numbers and symbols are cut from vinyl using a vinyl cutting machine. Most vinyl cutters are electric and computerized for ease of use.

Vinyl Storage

Store vinyl on rolls in a cool, dry area. If the vinyl is stored bent or folded, it will be difficult to cut or run through a vinyl cutting machine. Humid or hot vinyl can stick when it is being cut, which will cause errors and imperfections.

Use a Vinyl Cutter

Vinyl can be cut by hand using scissors or a sharp craft knife. For intricate cutting, large projects, or a large amount of cutting, a vinyl cutter will be useful. Vinyl cutters can be programmed to use different fonts and different sizes to make a large variety of different vinyl letters, numbers and symbols. Vinyl cutters are somewhat expensive, but they save time and have a greater precision than cutting by hand .

Blade Maintenance

Keep up with blade maintenance for the best results. Blades should be kept clean and sharp to easily cut through vinyl. Follow manufacturer directions for the proper cleaning, sharpening and replacement of your blade.

Vinyl Type

Use the correct type of vinyl for the project and for your machine. A thin vinyl is easier to use when creating small or intricate vinyl cuttings. Refer to the manufacturer's directions to ensure that you use the correct type of vinyl.

Machine Protection

Keep your vinyl cutter protected when it is not in use. Cover the machine to keep dust from entering the unit, since dust can dull the blade and cause imperfections while cutting. Unplug the machine and use a power surge protector to protect the machine from sudden electrical changes that can cause damage to the cutter.
