Death Note
is popular among teens, and many idolize the main character, Light.
Anime is growing ever more popular in the United States, and one of the big names in the anime scene is Death Note. Death Note follows a high school student named Light Yagami. Yagami, like most people, doesn't deal well with annoyances. Unlike the rest of us, however, Light's reactions are much more drastic and, sometimes, deadly. To understand what annoys Light most, you need to know a little more about Light overall.
Who is Light Yagami?
Light Yagami is a young genius and the son of a police detective. He studies crime so that he might become a pillar of justice like his father. The life of studying and classes bores him. He finds no challenge in school life, and nothing excites him, until he discovers a notebook that belongs to a god of death. This amazing notebook gives the holder the ability to kill anyone whose name is written in its pages. Yagami decides that such power should be used to cleanse the world of all criminals. However, as he is drawn deeper into this entrancing power, he starts to kill off those he sees as "useless," granting himself the title of God of the New World as he shapes society to fit his own image of utopia. Anyone who annoys Yagami is likely to be killed in his perfect world. So what, exactly, annoys this power-mad young god?
Crime
No one is worse in Light's eyes than a criminal. No matter how large or small the offense, Light believes that anyone who would break the law is not worthy of life. He is somewhat hypocritical in this respect, as he will go any length to carry on with his cleansing of the world, even killing the lawful investigators involved in tracking him down, and breaking many laws himself to identify the names of criminals.
Ignorance
Stupidity is a blight on Light's perfect world, and he wipes it out whenever possible. Ignorant behavior is, to Light, only a step away from criminal. Rather than allow such ignorance to run rampant, he eliminates it without mercy. However, he doesn't burden himself with every simpleton. He prefers to focus his actions on correcting more unforgivable acts, only stopping for the ignorant when they disrupt his vision more immediately and visibly.
Arrogance
Arrogant behavior is quick to inspire Light's ire. This is perhaps the most hypocritical of his annoyances, since Light himself is incredibly arrogant, as evidenced by his belief that he is righteous enough to judge all of humanity. However, despite this hypocrisy, few things tend to motivate Light to reckless action as much as arrogant foes. His desire to prove that the arrogance of the investigator L is unwarranted becomes the driving force behind many plot lines. As the story progresses, it even overtakes Light's desire for a "perfect world."
